Every property on DirectStay must meet this standard at every check-in. Hosts agree to it when they list. The standard is deliberately concrete — it is the checklist a property must pass before any Guest arrives, and it is published so Guests know exactly what they are entitled to expect. If a property you book does not meet this standard, report it through the Platform promptly so it can be verified and addressed while it can still be fixed. Your remedies are set out in the Terms of Service.
1.Safety Equipment
- Smoke detection: working smoke detectors on every level and as local code requires, tested and with fresh batteries or powered supply
- Carbon monoxide detection: working CO detectors wherever the property has fuel-burning appliances, an attached garage, or as local code requires
- Fire extinguisher: at least one accessible, charged extinguisher on the premises, with its location noted in the check-in information
- Safe egress: exits operable from the inside without a key; escape routes not blocked
- First-aid basics available and marked, and emergency contact information (local emergency numbers, property address, and the Host's contact) posted or included in check-in materials
2.Security and Access
- Functioning locks on all exterior doors, and working locks or secure latches on accessible ground-floor windows
- Access method (smart lock, lockbox, keys) tested and working before every check-in, with clear instructions delivered before arrival
- Codes rotated between guests where smart locks or lockboxes are used
3.Privacy — Surveillance Rules
- No cameras or audio recording devices in interior guest-accessible living spaces. None.
Bedrooms, bathrooms, living areas, kitchens — prohibited without exception, including disconnected or "decorative" devices
- Exterior or entry-point monitoring (doorbell cameras, driveway cameras) is permitted only if disclosed in the listing before booking
- Undisclosed or prohibited surveillance is a severe violation: immediate suspension and grounds for termination
4.Clean and Habitable
- Professionally clean or equivalent at check-in: sanitized bathrooms and kitchen, fresh linens and towels for the booked guest count, floors and surfaces clean, trash removed
- Free of pest infestations; free of mold and sewage issues; no accumulated hazards
- Working essential utilities: water, hot water, electricity, functioning toilets, and heating or cooling adequate for the season and climate
- If the property becomes uninhabitable before a stay, the Host must tell you and the Platform right away.
5.As Advertised
- Every amenity listed must be present and operational — WiFi at reasonable speeds if advertised, hot tubs and pools maintained and usable in season as described, appliances working
- Photos must show the actual property in substantially its current condition; occupancy limits, bed counts, and parking must match reality
- Known limitations (construction nearby, shared spaces, stairs-only access, camera locations) belong in the listing, not in the Guest's discovery at arrival
6.At Check-In, Every Time
- Access works, the property is clean, safety equipment is in place, advertised amenities function, and check-in instructions are accurate
- The Host or a designated contact is reachable during your arrival window and responds promptly if you report an access problem.
7.How This Is Enforced
- Guest reports of standard failures are investigated with evidence from both sides — a complaint is not a conviction, and a photo of a genuinely dirty or unsafe condition is taken seriously. Where a failure is verified, it is recorded against the Host's account and may result in a required correction, suspension of the listing until the issue is fixed and verified, or removal from the Platform. Safety failures and surveillance violations are treated as severe and may result in immediate suspension. The standard protects the Hosts who meet it: it is why Guests trust direct booking.
